Celebrate the Holidays in Flagstaff with the Weatherford Hotel’s Great Pinecone Drop and Annual Festivities
The historic Weatherford Hotel invites locals and visitors to embrace the magic of the season with two beloved Flagstaff traditions—the Great Pinecone Drop and Breakfast with Santa—along with an array of festive opportunities to host holiday gatherings in one of Arizona’s most iconic venues.
New Year’s Eve & the Great Pinecone Drop
Since the turn of the millennium, the Great Pinecone Drop has been Flagstaff’s signature New Year’s Eve celebration, drawing thousands downtown to ring in the new year beneath the illuminated pinecone atop the Weatherford Hotel. The event fills the city’s lodging, restaurants, and shops, contributing to a vibrant and festive downtown atmosphere. Guests can enjoy three countdowns: a family-friendly drop at noon, an East Coast celebration at 10 p.m., and the classic midnight drop.
SOLD OUT! Boutique Room Bookings
Spend New Year’s Eve in style by booking one of the Weatherford’s seventeen boutique hotel rooms. Each reservation includes two Golden Tickets to the exclusive “All That Glitters” celebration in the Zane Grey Ballroom.
SOLD OUT! A La Carte Golden Tickets
Just 100 Golden Tickets for “All That Glitters” will be sold outside of room bookings. These tickets grant access to the Zane Grey Bar, Ballroom, and Balcony beginning at 8 p.m., along with catered hors d’oeuvres, desserts, a prime rib carving station, and champagne service from 8–11:30 p.m. While abundant, the food is not intended to replace a full dinner; most guests reserve a meal beforehand at Charly’s or other downtown restaurants.
LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE: Fine-Dining Dinner at Charly’s — $80 per person
Before the evening’s festivities, Charly’s Pub & Grill will offer a limited-seating, multi-course holiday dinner, seated at 5:30pm, 7pm, and 8:30pm. Guests may choose from appetizers such as crab cakes or pork belly; shrimp bisque or a crisp romaine salad; entrées including prime rib, osso buco, chicken cordon bleu, rack of lamb, or pan-seared scallops; and dessert options of crème brûlée or peach cobbler crumble. A $40-per-person deposit is required at booking and is applied to the final bill, along with 20% automatic. For reservations, contact Events Coordinator Bailey Nichols at (928) 779-1919 or here.
Live Music in Charly’s & the Gopher Hole — $20 per person
Throughout the night, guests can enjoy a live blues jam in Charly’s and Flagstaff’s disco-funk favorites, Bad Delicious, in the Gopher Hole. Access is included with Golden Tickets or dinner reservations; all others may purchase entry at the door for $20 (cash or card). Capacity limits apply, and re-entry may require waiting in line.

The Origin Story of Flagstaff’s Great Pinecone Drop
A Celebrated Pinecone
By Scott Craven
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner gap=”20″][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]People usher in the new year with horns, champagne and noisemakers. All well and good, but if you really want to do it right, there’s nothing like lowering a 70-pound, 6-foot-tall, well-lit metallic pinecone.
You might think such a New Year’s Eve breakthrough is recent, given advances in festive technology. But Flagstaff’s annual Pinecone Drop goes back to 1999, a sand-weighted plastic trash can and lots of hot glue.
The pinecone started as a trash can? Oh yes!
